Ever since the Department of Geography started its journey over five decades back, the Department has been simultaneously, consistently and successfully performing the multiple roles of creating new knowledge, acquiring new capabilities and producing an intelligent human resource pool contributing in various domains of the society. The Department has always been on a higher growth path and has experienced and dedicated faculty with strong commitment who work with zeal and zest to provide a vibrant and optimum learning environment. The growth of expertise of faculty of the department is commendable. In lieu of the Department’s vision, the holistic development of the students is focused upon that instills a habit of continued learning and sense of responsibility in them to contribute towards the betterment of the society. The periodically updated curriculum imports technical knowledge to the students and the application based environment in the state of the art laboratories compliments the same. The students are motivated to participate in the presentations, workshops, and seminars that are essential in maintaining proficiency. The highly experienced and motivated faculty members are always in the process of tuning the young minds to make them globally competitive. Novel methods of teaching and learning process are adopted to achieve excellence in learning abilities. Department has an excellent infrastructure and provides a conducive environment to promote academic excellence. A strong positive reputation of the Department attracts students from other disciplines and a significant proportion of our students have qualified country’s prestigious examinations.

The Post Graduate Department of Geography in Amar Singh College campus was established in 2005 and till date is the only PG Department of Geography in the college. The Department of Geography was initially started at SP College in 1941 and then it was shifted to Amar Singh College in 1946 along with men (Human resource) and material (Lab equipment). Amar Singh College was the only college in valley where geography was offered at graduation level as one of the core subjects. The Department of Geography was headed by A.N. Raina (1946-66), the first indigenous Ph.D. in Geography. The permission to start PG was given to this department in due recognition of higher academic standards set by the department. At present we are running UG, IG and PG Programmes successfully. The department at present has the faculty strength of four (04) with diverse specializations and good teaching experience. The faculty members have pursued their studies and research from prestigious Universities of the country like JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia and Kashmir University. The department is the only PG, Geography Department of the Cluster University having such a qualified and experienced faculty, besides having a departmental library and remote sensing and GIS lab.
