As Head of the Sociology department, it is my honour to introduce you to this department of Amar Singh College, which has a proud history. Amar Singh Colllege is one of the oldest Colleges of Srinagar and has a rich history of producing persons of eminence in different fields.The Sociology Department which was created in the year 1998 and Sociology being the most important Social Science for understanding society and social relations and contributing for making it better,the relevance of subject has become more important because of the technological revolution impacting the society. In the department of Sociology, it is our endeavour to understand, guide and teach Sociology from Global level with emphasis to understand its impact on the local level. I trust that we shall try to continue our best practices to the expectations of not only academicians and students but also of society at large.

Established in 1998, the department of Sociology is one among the premier departments of Amar Singh College. The department offers three (03) years of B. A programme for undergraduate students. Choice Based Credit System was started w.e.f. 2016.Presently there are two permanent faculty, Dr Shabnam Ara and Ms. Shafia Mahudin. The number of students is 1520 in the ongoing three (03)semesters.The basket of courses operated at the department include: Sociological Thought, Indian Society; Structure and Change, Methodology of Social Research along with the other courses.The department recognises the growing demand for trained manpower in social service sectors, in this regard skill enhance courses have been incorporated in the syllabi, viz; Gender Sensitisation and Techniques of Social Research etc.The department is committed to the core values of our College: Excellence, Competence and Educational Leadership in Academics.
